What is Parkour?
Parkour is getting from point A, to point B in the fastest time possible! You may have thought that flips and tricks are parkour, but that’s called Freerunning. Freerunning is a whole different category and we will be going over that in next weeks tutorial. So now you have an idea of what parkour is, let’s jump in and learn how to do it!
Parkour 101
You may think that it is impossible to learn parkour. Wrong! If you start with the basics, it is easy to learn parkour. The first thing to learn is vaults. A vault is getting over an obstacle in an efficient way. There are four main vaults you will use throughout parkour the Lazy Vault, Speed Vault, Dash Vault, and Kong Vault; the hardest vault.
Next thing to learn is Wall Runs! A wall run is where you run up a wall to pull yourself over. This can take awhile to learn but it is something essential to learn before you move onto more advanced tricks! Check out this video from Freerunningfalcon!
Last thing, the Parkour Roll, also known as the safety roll. This allows you to jump off of high heights with as much impact as a jumping jack! This is an extremely hard move to master, but it is fun once you learn to do it properly!
Parkour Safety
Safety is the most important thing in parkour! Let me begin with safety tips for when doing vaults. First thing, never clip your feet on the object you’re vaulting over! This can be very dangerous because you can fall on your head, shoulder, or face. To prevent this, bring your hips up really high while jumping over the object. Next, never vault in the rain, this rule I learned the hard way. While doing a dive kong in the rain, my hands slipped and I fell on my shoulder. I broke my collarbone and separated my shoulder! So don’t do vaults or any parkour in the rain! It is extremely dangerous.
Now for wall run’s safety. There is not much you can do to hurt yourself during a wall run. Just make sure you keep your opposite dominate hand is in front of you so you don’t hit your face.
How Do I start?
So now that you know all the techniques for these moves, how do you start? When I started two years ago, I had no idea what to do. I went outside and tried to jump off heights, but I didn’t know how to do it correctly and ended up hurting myself. I kept trying to get things to use for obstacles, but I couldn't find any. Don’t let anything stop you from learning parkour!
When learning this awesome talent, you need to understand that things will get in your way, but you can’t let those things stop you! If you can’t find any ledges or anything to parkour on, be creative. Make something if you have to or go to a park and jump around on the kids playground. Over time you will see how easy it is to learn.
Conclusion
Now that you know all the tips, safeties, and dangers of parkour, you should be ready to start! Remember that you can watch these videos more than once. These are the ways I learned parkour and everyone has different ways of learning. Some people like to train alone and some like to train with others! I enjoy training with my younger brother, but I still train alone sometimes. Now don’t let anything stop you! Go outside and get moving!
